History of the Dominican Republic 1965-1966 Battle Streamer
In 1965, the United States swiftly responded to an uprising in the Dominican Republic, suspected to be fueled by Communist influence. On April 28, a Navy task force, including over 500 U.S. Marines, landed near Santo Domingo to ensure the safe evacuation of American citizens. President Lyndon B. Johnson ordered Army paratroopers to join the mission, while U.S. Air Force fighter jets and reconnaissance squadrons provided support. The U.S. military reached a peak force of nearly 24,000 troops by May 17. On May 29, the U.S. and troops from six Latin American nations formed the Inter-American Peace Force under the Organization of American States, working together to restore stability. The U.S. gradually withdrew its forces, with the last units departing on September 21, 1966, ensuring the prevention of a Communist takeover in the region.
