The current national flag of Afghanistan was adopted August 19th, 2013. A lot of the same designs from previous flags were used in the current design. Afghanistan has had 25 different flags since the Hotak dynasty was established in 1709. In the 20th century alone, they have gone through 18 different national flags. Although though they have gone through so many changes, black, red, and green have been primarily used in all of their flags. The black color represents it’s troubled 19th century history, the red color represents the blood of those who fought for independence, and the green represents hope and prosperity for the future. The original tricolor was inspired by the German flag after the Afghan king, Amanullah Khan, visited Europe in 1928. The Emblem of Afghanistan has been a feature of the national flag for almost every flag since 1928. The Emblem has a mosque in it, which first appeared in 1901, and wheat, which was added in 1928.
