The national flag of Algeria consists of two equal vertical bars of green and white, charged in the center with a red star and crescent, a symbol of the nation’s prominent faith, Islam. The Barbary pirates of Ottoman Algeria used flags that were emblazoned with one or more crescents. The color varied greatly, with dark red, black, green and white in use. The Algerian pirates also used plain color flags as well as other motifs, such as suns, stars, and swords. The creator of the current flag is disputed over, but it is generally accepted that the flag was sewn by Émilie Busquant in 1934. The green on the current flag is to represent Islam, while the white represents purity. Although some say that the white in the flag also reminds of Abd el-Kader, who used a white flag in his fight against the French in 1847.
