The Autonomous Region of Azores adopted their national flag in 1979, using several distinct features that are used on the Portuguese flag before the revolution of 1910. While using the same vertical bicolors as the Portuguese flag, the blue only takes up two-fifths of the flag on the hoist while the white field takes up the remaining three-fifths on the fly. The colors are traditionally the colors of Portugal, Azores was a Liberal stronghold for the Duke of Terceira during the Portuguese Civil War in the 19th century. The colors of the flag are to signify their important role in the establishment of a constitutional monarchy for Portugal. In the top left-hand corner is the Lesser coat of arms of Portugal. Where the two colors meet are nine five-pointed stars signifying the nine islands that make up the archipelago while the goshawk under the stars is representative of the islands’ name. In Portuguese, açor is the word for goshawk which was supposedly a common bird on the islands at the time of its discovery. In fact, these birds have never existed on the islands, the bird seen was a subspecies of buzzard that was erroneously identified as a goshawk by one of the first explorers.
