The staff is made of durable oak and measures to 1¼” diameter; the staff is two-piece for easy storage, connected by a brass joint in the middle. The flag of Zion, or the national flag of Israel, depicts a “dark sky-blue” Star of David on a white field with two thin blue bands running through the top half and bottom half. Though the flag was designed by the Zionist movement in 1891, it wasn’t adopted until October 28th, 1948, five months after the establishment of the State of Israel. The colors used in the design of the flag recalls the Tallit, a Jewish prayer shawl, traditionally white with blue or black stripes. While the Star of David has been a Jewish symbol used since the late medieval era, it wasn’t officially adopted until 1897 by the First Zionist Congress. The blue used to create the blue band in the Tallit is made from a marine snail and processed into tekhelet. The dye was very important economically for both Jewish and non-Jewish cultures of the time as it was symbol of royalty and upper class. In the Bible, God commands the Israelites to use this dye when making the Tallit’s tassels (tzitzit), “so that they may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the Lord, and do them. (Num 15:39)”
