History of the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 1965-1966 Battle Streamer
The Dominican Republic 1965-1966 Battle Streamer represents a critical chapter in U.S. military history. In response to an uprising in the Dominican Republic suspected to be influenced by Communist forces, the United States intervened in 1965 to protect American citizens and restore stability. A Navy task force, including over 500 Marines, landed near Santo Domingo to begin evacuating U.S. citizens on April 28. President Lyndon B. Johnson quickly ordered Army paratroopers to reinforce the effort. The U.S. military, including Air Force fighter jets and reconnaissance squadrons, engaged in combat as the operation grew, with nearly 24,000 U.S. troops on the ground by May 17.
By May 29, the United States, in partnership with six Latin American nations, formed the Inter-American Peace Force under the Organization of American States. After a sustained presence over the next 15 months, U.S. forces withdrew, with the last units leaving on September 21, 1966. The intervention played a key role in preventing a potential Communist takeover in the region, and this Battle Streamer serves as a lasting symbol of the bravery and efforts of those who served during this period.
