History of the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 1965-1966 Battle Streamer:
In 1965, a violent uprising in the Dominican Republic, suspected of being influenced by Communism, prompted the U.S. to take military action. On April 28, U.S. Marines landed near Santo Domingo to evacuate American citizens. President Lyndon B. Johnson ordered additional Army paratroopers to join the operation, with U.S. forces eventually reaching nearly 24,000 troops by May 17. Air Force fighter jets and reconnaissance squadrons played a crucial role in this mission. By May 29, U.S. forces joined with soldiers from six Latin American nations to form the Inter-American Peace Force under the Organization of American States. The U.S. forces gradually withdrew by September 21, 1966, as stability was restored and the threat of a Communist takeover was averted. This Battle Streamer honors the Air Force's vital contributions during this critical period in history.
