History of the SANCTUARY COUNTEROFFENSIVE 1970 Battle Streamer
In May 1970, the U.S. Army 1st Cavalry Division, supported by USAF airlift and tactical air forces, conducted an incursion into Cambodia. This operation aimed to eliminate Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces and disrupt their supply lines. The 834th Air Division played a crucial role in delivering supplies and evacuating civilians from Cambodian towns. Simultaneously, Seventh Air Force provided close air support, B-52s bombed enemy sites beyond the Cambodian border, and USAF continued missions even after Allied ground forces withdrew in June 1970. The campaign proved successful, surprising the enemy and capturing significant quantities of weapons. However, it led to increased Communist attacks in South Vietnam and spread conflict into Laos. The USAF also resumed reconnaissance missions over North Vietnam in 1970, amidst intermittent peace talks in Paris.
