History of the American Theater Battle Streamer
Following the Pearl Harbor attack, the United States Army Air Forces (AAF) took charge of aerial antisubmarine warfare. AAF units conducted extensive patrols over U.S. coastal waters, the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and Atlantic Ocean to counter German U-boat threats. Despite challenges, constant aerial patrols disrupted submarine attacks, leading to the creation of the Gulf Task Force and later the Army Air Forces Antisubmarine Command (AAFAC). With the deployment of advanced aircraft, including B-24 Liberators with radar, the submarine threat diminished. In August 1943, the AAFAC was inactivated, and the U.S. Navy assumed responsibility for antisubmarine operations in the American Theater. This battle streamer commemorates the AAF's dedication and bravery during a critical period in World War II.
