History of the Kosovo Air Campaign (1999)
The Kosovo Air Campaign, also known as Operation Allied Force, was a NATO-led mission aimed at ending the humanitarian crisis in Kosovo during the Yugoslav Wars. From March 24 to June 10, 1999, US Air Force and NATO forces conducted a sustained bombing campaign to weaken the Yugoslav military's capacity and bring an end to the atrocities committed against Kosovar Albanians.
This strategic air campaign was a turning point in modern warfare, marking one of the first large-scale uses of air power to achieve humanitarian goals. The operation involved precision airstrikes, reconnaissance missions, and extensive coordination among NATO allies. After 78 days of relentless air operations, the campaign successfully led to the withdrawal of Yugoslav forces from Kosovo and the establishment of international peacekeeping forces to maintain stability.
