Adopted at the time of their independence, the national flag of The Bahamas features a black triangle on the hoist over a horizontal tricolor of aquamarine-gold-aquamarine. The adoption of the flag replaced the British Blue Ensign with emblem of the Crown Colony of The Bahamas. The flag has several different cultural, political, and regional connotations. The aquamarine symbolizes the sea surrounding the island while the gold represents the shining sun as well as the natural resources key to the economy of The Bahamas. The black epitomizes the “strength, vigor, and force” of the Bahamian peoples while the direction of the triangle symbolizes the “enterprising and determined” nature to cultivate the abundant natural resources of the country. During the 1972 elections, a contest was held for the design of the flag; while some countries choose one submitted entry, The Bahamas decided for an amalgamation using elements from the submitted entries. The new national flag was raised July 10th, 1973, the day they gained their independence.
