Key Features:
British merchant and passenger ships have flown the Red Ensign since 1707. Before 1707, an English red ensign and a Scottish red ensign were flown by the country’s respective navy. The appearance of the first ensign is not quite known, but surviving payment receipts indicate that the English navy was paying for these flags to be sewn in 1620. After the Act of Union in 1801, the Union Jack was added to the ensign. In 1854, the Merchant Shipping Act 1854 included a specific provision that the Red Ensign was the appropriate flag for the British merchantman. There are 3 different styles of ensign for the British navy; white for those in the Royal Naval Service, blue for those in the Royal Naval Reserve, and then the red which is assigned to the British merchantmen.
