History of the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 1965-1966 Battle Streamer
In 1965, a violent uprising in the Dominican Republic, suspected of being influenced by Communist forces, prompted swift U.S. military intervention. Over 500 Marines landed near Santo Domingo on April 28 to assist in the evacuation of American citizens. President Lyndon B. Johnson expanded the operation by deploying Army paratroopers. Over the following weeks, U.S. Air Force fighter jets and reconnaissance squadrons supported the effort, with U.S. troop numbers reaching nearly 24,000 by May 17. Alongside forces from six Latin American nations, the United States formed the Inter-American Peace Force under the Organization of American States on May 29. By September 21, 1966, the U.S. had successfully restored stability and prevented a Communist takeover, with all American forces withdrawn.
