History of the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 1965-1966 Battle Streamer
In 1965, a violent uprising in the Dominican Republic, feared to be linked to Communist influence, prompted the United States to take decisive military action. On April 28, U.S. Marines landed near Santo Domingo to ensure the safety of American citizens, and President Lyndon B. Johnson ordered the deployment of Army paratroopers. Over the next several weeks, U.S. Air Force fighter jets and reconnaissance squadrons played a key role in combat operations. The conflict escalated to nearly 24,000 U.S. troops on the ground by mid-May.
By May 29, an Inter-American Peace Force was formed, consisting of U.S. forces and military personnel from six Latin American nations, under the banner of the Organization of American States. The mission continued until September 1966, when U.S. forces gradually withdrew, having prevented a Communist takeover and restored stability to the Dominican Republic.
This embroidered Battle Streamer honors the sacrifice and service of those who served in this critical mission, reflecting the strength, resolve, and solidarity of the United States and its allies during a defining moment in Cold War history.
