National Spirit of ‘45 Day in 2022

Posted by Hayley Adams on Aug 11th 2022

The National Spirit of ’45 Day celebrates the positive attitude and determination of the generation that endured the difficult times of World War II. Spirit of ’45 Day falls on the second weekend of August and coincides with August 14, 1945, the day President Truman announced the ending of WWII.

In 2010, Congress unanimously voted in favor of a national “Spirit of ’45 Day” to preserve and honor the legacy of the men and women of the World War II generation so that their example of national unity, shared sacrifice, can-do attitude, and service to their and country continues to inspire future generations of Americans.

Even though it has been over 75 years since the end of World War II, there are so many great lessons that our generation and future generations can still learn and reflect on today. Spirit of ’45 Day encourages us to examine our country's history and look back on all we were able to overcome. Our ancestors endured the difficult times of the Great Depression, achieved victory in WWII, and then undertook an unprecedented effort to assure a better future for their children and grandchildren. (Hence all the music from the ’70s & 80’s!)

It's Our Turn

It seems like now more than ever we need to remember all that our ancestors experieced during those trying times and more importantly, remember how they pushed through and continued building a better life for future generations to come. It’s our generation's turn to continue to unify the country and push forward for our children and children’s children so that one day, they can thank us for building a better future for them.
