Key Features:
In October, President Ronald Reagan, supported by the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States and the British Governor General of Grenada, initiated OPERATION URGENT FURY to safeguard American citizens, including tourists, retirees, and medical students, from a potentially hostile Grenadian government. The operation involved a coordinated assault, with Marines landing near Pearls Airport, Army Ranger battalions airdropped at Port Salines Airport, and air support provided by AC-130H gunships and Tactical Air Command aircraft. Over the next four days, U.S. forces subdued opposition, and Military Airlift Command transported Army airborne forces to Grenada. The operation successfully evacuated over 700 American citizens, eliminated Cuban military presence, and facilitated the establishment of a stable Grenadian government. The Air Force played a crucial role in medical evacuation, security, and logistical support during the operation, which concluded on November 2 with the redeployment of U.S. troops.
