Key Features:
In March 1975, North Vietnamese forces launched a decisive attack, leading to the collapse of South Vietnamese forces and their retreat. As the Communists advanced on Saigon in April, the U.S. government initiated the evacuation of refugees from Vietnam. On April 29, 1975, amidst a rocket attack, the evacuation shifted to helicopters, with the Marines and Air Force shuttling Americans and South Vietnamese from Saigon to Navy ships offshore. Air America, a CIA-contracted firm, participated in the helicopter evacuation amid fire from small arms and missiles. U.S. military aircraft, including F-4s and A-7s, provided support, and by midnight, over 7,000 people were evacuated. Despite the halt in the official evacuation, hundreds of South Vietnamese refugees found their way to a U.S. task force offshore. In April 1975, approximately 130,000 South Vietnamese fled, with most eventually resettling in the United States, marking the end of OPERATION FREQUENT WIND and the onset of another crisis in Southeast Asia.
