Key Features:
In March 1972, North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces launched a three-pronged offensive to defeat the Republic of Vietnam and reunite the country under a Communist regime. The offensive involved conventional attacks, crossing the DMZ into Quang Tri Province, invading the Central Highlands, and crossing the border from Cambodia. Despite initial successes, the enemy offensive stalled by May 8. U.S. air power played a significant role in supporting South Vietnamese forces. Peace negotiations in Paris were suspended, and the U.S. initiated bombing campaigns, including LINEBACKER and LINEBACKER II. A ceasefire agreement was reached on January 23, 1973, leading to the release of American POWs. The conflict officially ended, but Communist forces escalated ground wars in Southeast Asia, leading to the fall of Cambodia, South Vietnam, and Laos in subsequent years, marking the end of U.S. influence in the region.
