Key Features:
On August 23, 1958, the Chinese Communist government initiated a massive bombardment of the offshore island, Quemoy, occupied by Nationalist Chinese troops. In response, the United States deployed the Seventh Fleet to the Taiwan Straits to safeguard efforts to resupply the Nationalist Chinese garrisons. The USAF swiftly moved F-86D squadrons, F-100s, F-101s, RF-101 reconnaissance aircraft, and C-130 transports to Taiwan, showcasing its ability to deploy a significant tactical force to the Far East. A Composite Air Strike Force, supported by aerial refueling, made a strong show of force, including F-104 interceptors from Air Defense Command. The crisis ended with a cease-fire on October 7, 1958, and the Composite Air Strike Force redeployed to the United States in December, marking a successful demonstration of USAF capabilities while thwarting the Chinese Communists' attempt to expel Nationalist Chinese forces from the offshore islands.
