Key Features:
In 1958, the Air Task Force Thirteen, Provisional, also known as the Formosa Defense Command, took on the primary responsibility for the air defense of Taiwan under the Thirteenth Air Force. This task force played a crucial role in patrolling the Taiwan Straits, with the U.S. Air Force Section of the Military Assistance Advisory Group providing support, including equipping Nationalist Chinese F-86s with Sidewinder air-to-air missiles. Over the years, there were deployments of various aircraft, such as F-104s, RB-57Ds, and C-119Gs, to aid in the defense and aerial resupply of Quemoy and Matsu Islands. Tensions escalated in 1960 and 1962 due to increased Chinese Communist forces, leading to U.S. deployments and naval task forces in the Taiwan Straits. With the support of Air Task Force Thirteen, the Nationalist Chinese Air Force successfully repelled Communist aircraft, and by June 1963, the threat had considerably diminished.
