In June 1966, the USAF initiated airstrikes on petroleum facilities near Hanoi and Haiphong, expanding the ROLLING THUNDER campaign to include more targets in July. The campaign aimed to weaken North Vietnam's infrastructure, damaging storage, transportation, and power facilities. Despite significant destruction, the impact on North Vietnam's war capability was limited due to its small industrial base. The U.S. faced challenges with strengthened North Vietnamese air defenses, losing 455 aircraft by January 1967. However, a successful aerial battle in January 1967 boosted U.S. morale. In South Vietnam, Allied forces engaged in battles near the DMZ and Tay Ninh, successfully repelling Viet Cong and North Vietnamese offensives. The following year, U.S. Army units joined operations in Tay Ninh Province, achieving success with close air support. In Laos, the USAF targeted the Ho Chi Minh Trail and supported Laotian troops against Pathet Lao insurgents, with fluctuating outcomes in territorial gains.
