On April 1, 1968, the United States suspended bombing in North Vietnam above the 20th parallel, later moving it to the 19th parallel to encourage peace negotiations. Peace talks were agreed to in Paris on May 3. Preliminary discussions began on May 10, and Gen. Creighton Abrams took command on June 11. On August 1, Gen. George S. Brown replaced General Momyer as Commander, Seventh Air Force. Bombing resumed south of the 19th parallel on July 14, targeting supply routes. President Johnson halted all bombing in North Vietnam on October 31, 1968, to encourage peace progress. In Laos, there was increased conflict as Communists sent supplies down the Ho Chi Minh Trail. B-52s bombed truck parks and storage areas, while the USAF provided close air support in northern Laos. In South Vietnam during the summer of 1968, the USAF flew missions in support of Allied forces against Communist offensives, successfully blunting the attacks by mid-September.
