Key Features:
In October 1966, North Korean government agents infiltrated South Korea, leading to provocations and firefights along the demilitarized zone. On January 23, 1968, North Korea seized the USS Pueblo, a U.S. intelligence ship. In response, the United States expanded its forces, deploying air power to the region while negotiating for the release of the captured crew. The situation escalated, with increased U.S. Air Force presence and strategic airlift operations. The crew was eventually released on December 23, 1968, but tensions persisted. In April 1969, North Korea shot down a U.S. Navy EC-121. The Air Force aided in search efforts, but no survivors were found. In the following years, the U.S. maintained a military presence in South Korea, gradually reducing personnel as the North Korean threat diminished by 1971. By mid-1974, the USAF had one wing of F-4s and around 7,500 personnel in South Korea.
