Key Features:
In April 1961, President John F. Kennedy established a Military Assistance Advisory Group to collaborate with Laotian government forces against the Pathet Lao, Communist guerrillas in Laos. A Geneva conference in May aimed to negotiate a neutral status for Laos, but in November 1961, the Pathet Lao overran northern Laos. Responding, the United States increased troops in Thailand and sent a Seventh Fleet task force to Southeast Asia. A cease-fire was agreed upon in April 1962, and by July of the same year, the Geneva Conference declared Laos neutral. The United States withdrew its military advisers by October 1962, marking the end of its involvement in the conflict.
