Key Features:
In August 1961, the East German government constructed the Berlin Wall to prevent defectors from fleeing to West Berlin. Responding to this crisis, President John F. Kennedy mobilized around 154,000 reservists, including 25,900 Air Force reservists from Air National Guard units. An interim Composite Air Strike Force was deployed to European bases, while Air National Guard units undertook the largest overseas transfer of tactical aircraft since World War II, escorting traffic to West Berlin and training for combat operations. The challenging escort missions faced harassment from Soviet flyers in the air corridors. The first Air National Guard unit redeployed in May 1962, with others following, and the Berlin Operation officially continued until June 1963, linked to the Cuban Missile Crisis as an extension of the Soviet power play in Berlin.
