Key Features:
In December 1970, the USAF initiated COMMANDO HUNT V, the third dry season campaign in as many years. Focused on the Laotian panhandle, B-52s and fighter-bombers targeted passes between North Vietnam and Laos, creating chokepoints to disrupt enemy movement. The automated IGLOO WHITE system aided in locating moving targets along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Concurrently, the Lam Son 719 operation aimed to cut a segment of the trail in Laos. Despite reaching Tchepone, South Vietnamese forces faced heavy casualties and withdrew by March 1971. The USAF supported the withdrawal with tactical air and B-52 attacks. The campaign marked the extensive use of new weapons, including laser-guided bombs and "daisy cutter" bombs, enhancing accuracy and facilitating helicopter landing zones. While the war continued in Southeast Asia, retaliatory strikes, close air support missions, and peace talks unfolded in other regions. The North Vietnamese delegation boycotted and later resumed the Paris peace talks during this period.
