Key Features:
During the dry season of 1971-1972, the United States Air Force (USAF) launched COMMANDO HUNT VII, an air interdiction campaign primarily targeting enemy traffic along the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos. The campaign had three phases, involving bombing entry points, attacking transportation routes, and shifting air strikes between Laos and South Vietnam. The USAF also provided close air support for Laotian forces facing pressure from North Vietnamese troops. However, the missions became more perilous due to improved air defenses, including surface-to-air missiles. Amidst the escalating air and ground war, the U.S. continued its withdrawal from Southeast Asia, deactivating tactical fighter wings and reducing troop numbers in South Vietnam by the end of 1971. Despite ongoing peace talks, progress remained elusive, and in early 1972, Communist delegates boycotted the sessions. The USAF underwent inactivations and redeployments, while regional forces increasingly took on crucial air support roles.
