History of the VIETNAM AIR/GROUND 1968 Battle Streamer

The history provided recounts the air campaign in defense of Khe Sanh, a U.S. outpost, starting on January 22, 1968. Over 2 and 1/2 months, Allied forces launched continuous attacks, with B-52s bombing regularly, and AC-47 gunships providing night support. Airlifts, mainly using C-130s, brought in supplies and reinforcements, facing intense fire. Coordination challenges arose between the USAF and U.S. Marines, exacerbated by the Tet Offensive launched by the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong on January 30, 1968. The NVA withdrew from Khe Sanh in late March, and Allies relieved the base on April 6. Subsequent actions included a helicopter-borne attack on A Shau Valley and countering the Tet Offensive throughout South Vietnam. Despite initial challenges, Allied forces successfully repulsed the Tet Offensive, but the Communists gained a significant propaganda victory.
